Descripción enviada por el equipo del proyecto. Bairro do Lóios is located in Marvila, Lisbon. It was built between 1979 and 1981, as a result of the Chelas Urbanization Plan, promoted by the Lisbon Municipal Council, by the Portuguese Governement and also under cooperative initiative. With a strong social character, it brings together various cultures and different forms of appropriation and experience of urban space. The Lóios Gymnasium is located in the center of a circular set of residential buildings and represents a very important element for the dynamization of the resident population. Up until then, the pavilion had degraded facilities that were insufficient to meet the demand. The initiative of the Junta de Freguesia de Marvila was to refurbish and expand the locker rooms and bathrooms, adding a new gymnasium room.
The main vector of the project was the need to achieve a low cost construction, using more alternative constructive solutions, using primary materials as final finishing. In other words, economical materials were optimally used, as their application resulted in a resistant and even sophisticated final finish.
This strategy is visible on polished concrete pavement, brick walls with projected and tinted plaster mass, industrial metal frame painted with highlight colors and profiled metal sheet that give volume to the building in its outward appearance. All these materials, when used within a sports and urban aesthetic context, allowed the making of a contemporary space, with strong connection to its use and the location. As a more significant element of this idea stands out the façade wall which, being a simple towed wall, was prepared to be painted with graffiti, not only preventing the occurrence of tags and other vandalism as it allows the dialogue of the building with the surrounding .
